FUNDAMENTALS OF LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES: FRENCH LANGUAGE

A decade back, learning a foreign language or for that reason learning anything new called for large parcels of effort, money and tenacity. But, the internet revolution has changed all that. Today, the tool for learning or even obtaining little bits of information virtually on any subject is just a click away. It is amazing to see the mountains of information that the search engines store and serve just the exact bit for you whenever you command, just like an A la carte menu. Audio, Video, CD mp3 virtual classrooms and the list seems endless. That all these can be served right into your study or bed room is just short of a miracle.

We shall now look at some of the fundamental organization required to learn foreign languages and can apply to almost any learning exercise.

Setting the Goal:

When you decide to learn foreign languages, say French Language, the first step is to analyze the various tools available and zero in on one that suits you most. Having identified the tool, you should set the level of learning that you will reach over a specific time frame. It is always ideal and comfortable to climb each step one at a time. Therefore, your short term goal will be understanding the basics of the French Language and then moving on.

Time:

Learning exercises when completed will continue to live with you. They are not transitory in character. When you set out to learn foreign languages like the French language, you must allot quality time for the engagement. During the initial phase, quantity is not important, but quality certainly is. Whatever time you devote should be unhindered by environmental concerns like young children, music, television or other distractions. Your effort should be focused and undivided.

Consistency:

You should be consistent in your effort. If you have decided to learn French language only thrice in a week, never, never allow the schedule to be disturbed. On the day you have earmarked time for French learning, you receive an invitation to dine out and that threatens to encroach on your learning schedule, be bold enough to decline the invitation. Remember, knowledge acquired will be perpetual. Consistency will also take you to your goal faster than if you adopt a hop up and jump attitude.

Beyond the Goal post:

You will eventually complete your study and confidently declare that you have learned the foreign language, French. So you have got the wings, and are ready to fly. Practicing what you learned becomes important now. Look for some great books in the new language that you have acquired. Join some online forums, use dual language dictionary if you need to, and find someone who speaks the language you learned. This way, the knowledge you painstakingly acquired will not become dormant but will continue to reside in you with all its fragrance and flavor.
