Become a Linguist – Learn French Language

A linguist is a person who speaks several languages fluently. In certain situations, the scope can be extended to include persons with indepth knowledge of several languages. For the purpose of statistics, there are about 7000 languages listed as recognized languages in the world. How many are practiced then with any degree of regularity? Not even 1%. 95% of the world’s population only uses about 12 top languages and the Mandarin language of the Chinese finds itself perched at the top rungs of this list, possibly attributable to the fact that China has one of the largest populations in any country in the world. These statistics are not very latent and could be different when you undertake a research. If you were to ponder over one country or region with the largest number of active languages in day to day use, be the official language in that geographical region and have daily newspapers and other publications etc. India is the only place you will find, and most Indians know more than 3 languages, more often than not, English included.

Having discussed various aspects of being a linguist, we will now turn our attention to the specifics i.e., learning the French language.

Modern France has resulted from centuries of nation building and through acquisition and incorporation of several provinces and overseas colonies into the geographical and political structure of France. The evolution of all these regions brought along their own specific cultural and linguistic traditions in fashion, regional language, religious observance, cuisine, leisure engagements, industry etc.

Industrialization of France during the 20th century has seen a major movement of its population from the countryside to urban localities. Today, French farmers constitute only about 10% and well over 70% live in urban agglomerates, in contrast to about 50% of the French people depending on land for a living during the 19th century.
